Orotones – Calotype Tree

One of my favourite photographic process is the calotype. It is the basis of all modern, what is termed, analogue photography.

It is a slow process and demands dedication and commitment, the results have a calm “zen” like quality.

A calotype is a negative – traditionally printing was a salt print or an albumen print in a contact frame. I am experimenting by making contact bromide prints and then using a carbro process to transfer with sensitised gelatine tissue onto glass and them making an orotone.

This simple picture of a tree is probably the most boring in this gallery and seems to have no impact, but it is one of my personal favourites

The singular tree is outside  farmhouse just down the road from us.

It was a three minute exposure.

I am now working with cameras which can make a 30 x 40 cm negative which I can contact print directly onto sensitised carbon tissue and use a carbon transfer process onto glass.
